Early Years SEND solution Group

Feeling stuck? Not sure of the next steps for a child with SEND? Come along to a Solution Group and get free support & advice from other EY practitioners and Educational Psychologist.

A ‘Solution Group’ is a collaborative problem-solving process to bring about change for a child or group of children. During the session, each practitioner will describe a concern to the group, with the focus being on using the experience and expertise of the practitioners in the group to generate solutions. The process is facilitated by an Educational Psychologist

  • Solution Groups are used to discuss children who are on the Code of Practice. They are likely to be more complex cases which are ‘stuck’.
These children would typically have a My Support Plan in place.
  • For complex issues, the group will focus on 1 or 2 key aspects which they require support with.
  • Parental permission must be gained by the setting, prior to the meeting, for those children to be discussed.
  • Meetings will have up to six practitioners as well as an Educational Psychologist and sometimes have another Early Years Specialist such as District Specialist Centre staff or SEND Lead Worker.
  • Each case will be discussed within the group for 20-30 minutes.

Solution groups are highly interactive and very different from traditional ‘taught’ CPD sessions. Each session is responsive to the needs of the practitioners and the children they discuss, and is therefore unique. So, although this is not training, it should certainly be a useful contribution to your Continuing Professional Development; previous attendees have commented on how much they have learnt in the sessions. You are welcome to use flyers and materials from the group in your evidence folder. At the end of the meeting, each practitioner will leave with ideas and first steps.

This course is specifically for Early Years SENCo or Keyworker who has a child or SEND issue they would like support with, within their pre-school or nursery.

Not suitable for school Teachers.
