Professional Governance Lord Agnew, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the school system, 2017-2020, stated that “governance professionals are the cornerstone of effective governance; they are vital for ensuring that the governing board operates effectively and meets its statutory obligations”.
Governors are part of the largest volunteer group in the country. But the ever-increasing demands on the governor’s role dictate that whilst it is a voluntary role, the expectations about the core functions governors are responsible for are far from ‘amateur’. Governors can face physical barriers, due to the size and rural nature of Wiltshire – let alone having Salisbury Plain in the middle. Time can also be an issue, due to busy professional lives, family life and other commitments.
